You want to get pregnant, but you have diabetes, so you ask yourself whether you can get pregnant, and if so, will the baby be healthy? The good news is that a diabetic woman has as good of a chance of a healthy baby as someone without diabetes, provided that she carefully monitors her sugar level before and during the pregnancy.
Do you want to get pregnant? Plan it beforehand! If you have diabetes and you want to get pregnant, it is best to plan well in advance when you will actually start trying. In that case, it is best to monitor your sugar level carefully, since that level not only affects your health, but the baby’s as well. The baby’s organs are usually formed during the first 8 weeks and mostly it takes 4 weeks before you find out you are pregnant. So if you do not plan your pregnancy carefully and you do get pregnant, but your sugar level is not okay, then chances are that the child will have certain genetic defects when it is born, mostly in the brain, kidneys or heart.
Taking a multivitamin containing folic acid during three months before you want to get pregnant, reduces the risk of congenital defects.
Exercise regularly Regular exercise stabilises your blood sugar level and prevents your weight from increasing. If you practise no sport at all, it is advisable to start doing so gradually and not to force it. A daily workout of ten minutes is to be preferred over two hours of exercise once each week. It is best to start exercising about three to six months before you want to get pregnant.
Plan your meals Eat at regular times and see to it that your food does not contain too much sugar. Avoid artifical sweeteners, such as aspartame, since their influence on foetuses is not yet known. Start that eating routine about six months before you would like to get pregnant.
