The influence of depression and retirement on depression with men
Losing your job may not only have financial consequences. Recent research has pointed out that of all men who had been made redundant, one out of seven developed a depression within six months after his dismissal. After relational problems, unemployment is the second main cause of depression with men. A man’s job is often his status symbol and provides him with self-esteem. When you are fired, you lose your status symbols, such as your company car and you become dependent on your partner’s income. The man feels like he is being relegated and he can no longer exert as much control on the family as before. He needs to perform household chores and look after the children. At times like these, men who are naturally shy, are more susceptible to depression than men who are more self-assured. Depression in turn may pose a problem when trying to find another job. Even retirement may be a delicate problem with certain men, especially if their partner continues to work. The loss of contact with colleagues and the lack of daily structure are sometimes hard to handle. So even retired men are vulnerable to depression.
Homos and depression
Generally, there is no difference between the percentage of depression with homosexual and heterosexual men, although there is a difference to be found at a younger age. Teenagers and adolescents who are gay, allegedly experience more stress, due to whether or not they should ‘come out’, which may make them a victim of depression more easily.
Men, depression and suicide
Suicide with depressed men is three times as current as with women. Divorced men or widowers belong to the largest high-risk group. If, in addition, the man in question is a heavy drinker, that increases the chances of suicide exponentially.
In recent years, more and more men have committed suicide, especially men in the age category of 16 to 24 and of 39 to 54. The reason why is still unknown. Depressed men do not tend to admit their suicidal thoughts as easily as women. That is why it is important to ask them yourself if they are considering suicide. Posing that question will certainly not be the deciding factor whether that person will or will not end his life. Even if he is not feeling well, but has never thought of suicide before, raising that question will not trigger him to do so either. However, if that person brings up the issue himself, there is nothing more demoralising than not taking it seriously and laughing it away. It must have taken him incredibly much courage to open up about it. Expressing that such thoughts are going through his head may be an enormous relief to a depressed person.
