Weight changes. An increase or decrease in body weight is also typical of depression. It is the direct consequence of more or less appetite. All of a sudden, you start eating everything, or, just the opposite, you have a lack of appetite. Eating becomes an assignment and you have to force yourself to get any food down.
Restlessness. Inner restlessness is a signal as well that you are suffering from depression. That restlessness is often combined with a typical agitation and irritation, which can be very annoying to the outside world.
Fatigue. You feel extremely tired every day. You lack energy and when you wake up in the morning, you may feel even more tired than the night before. To other people, it looks like you are doing everything in slow motion, your movements are slow and you speak slowly and monotonously.
Low self-esteem. Depressed people generally have a very low self-esteem. They feel guilty and worthless, without valid reasons to feel this way.
Less sex drive. If you used to be sexually active before your depression you will notice a dramatic decrease in sexual intercourse when you are depressed.
Suicidal thoughts. Since you are thinking very negatively about yourself, your situation and your future, thoughts of death and suicide surface rather frequently.
Depression may cause many physical complaints, such as constipation, diarrhea, indigestion, head and back aches. Many depressed people also have all sorts of anxieties.
Children and adults may respond differently to depression. The symptoms may take on a different form or be hidden by other behaviour. Children may feign being sick, worry about one of their parents dying, perform badly at school, refuse to go to school, or manifest certain behaviour problems.
