Do’s and don’ts when trying to get pregnant?

Certain couples have no problem whatsoever to get pregnant. Other couples have been trying for years in vain to have a baby. Yet, there are several matters which may increase your chances of getting pregnant. There are some things which are highly recommended and some which are to be avoided, if you want to get pregnant fast.

Getting pregnant: do’s!

• Have sexual intercourse regularly. If you make love frequently, say twice or three times a week, it is fairly likely that you will have sex at the woman’s most fertile period. For most couples, that is enough. Moreover, if you are a young couple, there is simply no such thing as having too much sex.

• Have intercourse daily during the period of the ovulation. Especially those few days before the supposed ovulation are important, if you want to get pregnant. If you make love every day during that period, you increase your chances of conception. Eventhough the sperm quantity is less because of the frequent ejaculations, that will not reduce your chances of getting pregnant.

• Pursue a healthy lifestyle. Watch your diet, eat healthy, exercise, keep your weight under control, and avoid stress as much as possible. Those good habits will help you when trying to get pregnant and during your pregnancy as well.

• Consider a schedule when you want to get pregnant. If your health is not up to scratch, it is best to do something about it instead of trying to get pregnant right away. If you are not very healthy, the chances of problems getting pregnant and a difficult pregnancy are much higher then if you are in good condition.

• Take your vitamins. Folic acid or vitamin B9 are essential to the baby’s development. If you have been taking folic acid or vitamin B9 as from  the first month and throughout the first three months of your pregnancy, the chance of a baby with spina bifida (insufficient closure of the spine) is reduced by 70%!

Getting pregnant: don’ts!

• Quit smoking. Smoking increases the secretion of mucus in the vagina, which reduces the chance of sperm reaching the egg cell and hence your chance of getting pregnant. Moreover, smoking increases the chance of miscarriage. It cuts off the flow of air and nutrients. The best thing is to stop smoking when you really want to get pregnant.

• Do not drink alcohol. No alcoholic drinks should be drunk during pregnancy or if you are trying to get pregnant.

• Watch out for particular medication. Certain medicines which can be obtained from the pharmacy without prescription can thwart your attempts at getting pregnant. Therefore always ask your pharmacist or doctor for advice.
