Vaginal secretion can be an aid to determine when your ovulation takes place and therefore when you are most likely to get pregnant. Right before the ovulation you can notice an increase in vaginal secretion. It is a white, clear liquid which reminds of egg white. After the ovulation, the liquid becomes thicker and darker. The advantage of this method is that it is fairly reliable and accurate to determine the period when you can conceive easily. A normal observation of your vaginal secretion is enough to determine the best moment to get pregnant. The disadvantage is that it is a subjective judgement which is not always as reliable.
Another method which is often applied to determine when you can best conceive is the temperature method. At the time of the ovulation, the body temperature rises significantly. That increase can vary from 0.5 to 1.6 degrees centigrade. The ovulation has taken place when the increased temperature lasts for three days. The best moment to conceive is two to three days before the temperature starts rising. The basic temperature you should compare with, is when you are fully at rest. It is best to take your temperature always at the same time, for instance in the morning when you get up. If you write down your temperature daily, you will soon recognize reoccruing patterns in your temperature graph. The advantage is that it is a simple and cheap method. You only require a thermometer and a piece of paper. It is a good way to see how regular you are and what the best time is to conceive. The disadvantage is that it is not always possible to take your temperature at the same time every day, especially not if you have irregular working hours. Moreover, with certain women, the increase is only very minimal and it is hard to derive when the most fertile period starts.
There are also ovulation kits on the market which may determine when the ovulation occurs. They measure the amount of hormones present in your urine, which is a very reliable but quite expensive method.
