Getting pregnant in your twenties: what are your odds?

If you want to get pregnant in your twenties, then you have the benefit of time and a good body physiology. Normally, getting pregnant should not be a problem, since your body is in a very fertile period and generally your attempts at getting pregnant for a second time will go off without a hitch as well.

The advantages of getting pregnant in your twenties.

From a biological point of view, the time between twenty and thirty years of age is the most fertile period. Experts believe that a woman experiences her most fertile period at the age of 24. Getting pregnant should go very smoothly at that age.

Like every woman, you are born with a load of egg cells, generally about 1 billion. By the time you reach puberty, only 300,000 are left. Only 400 of  them will be released by your ovaries. As you get older, your ovaries age as well and hence the egg cell quality decreases.
Young women have another benefit, e.g. a smaller chance of certain female complaints such as fibroids or endometritis.

Also typical pregnancy complaints such as high blood pressure and diabetes are much less diagnosed with pregnant women between the age of twenty and thirty. Moreover, their chance of a premature baby or a miscarriage is much smaller.

If you want to get pregnant and you are 21 or 29, there is little difference when it comes to fertility. Generally, there are no or few problems when trying to get pregnant.

The benefits of pregnancy at a young age is that you are still vital and can easily cope with the combination of working and raising children. The grandparents too are mostly still young and can step in where necessary.

The disadvantages of getting pregnant in your twenties

In your twenties, you are still trying to find your way professionally. If you want to build up a career, then now is the time. Getting pregnant may be an obstacle to your professional plans. If you have been out of it for a certain period, it is not always that easy to get back on track. Research has even shown that, statistically speaking, women who interrupt their career for a pregnancy make less money than childless women. Pregnancy definitely leaves its trail in the professional field.

From a biological point of view, getting pregnant during that period is optimal, but financially it can be a rough time. Young couples often still have to buy all sorts of things, they have to pay off the loan for their house or car, whereas they often only earn minimum wages, and they have to decorate a nursery. Should your finances be tight, it may be best to postpone getting pregnant for a while, until you have some more financial breathing room.

The influence of a child on your fresh relationship should not be underestimated either. Sometimes, women feel depressed and overrun by the extra work because of the baby. Fathers, however, may feel neglected because his wife devotes most of her attention to the baby. Pregnancy and birth definitely influence the relationship of a young couple.

Younger couples are also less inclined to make sacrifices to raise their child. It is sometimes hard to accept your lifestyle has changed as a result of a newborn. Going to a party every week will no longer be an option. Shopping at ease with a friend will most likely become an exception to the rule. When you are older, it will be easier to accept that and you will make sacrifices for your child’s benefit with pleasure.

How likely am I to get pregnant in my twenties?

If you want to get pregnant and you have sexual intercourse during the time of the ovulation, there is only a 25% chance that you will succeed in the first month. Your chances of getting pregnant during the first year amount to 90%. Only 7% of all women in their twenties have fertility problems as opposed to 70% of all women in their forties. Women in their twenties only have a 6% chance of not being able to get pregnant, whereas 64% of all women in their forties cannot get pregnant anymore. Moreover, women in their forties or older have three times as much chance of miscarriage than a woman in her twenties.
