How come my child has ADHD?

One of the first questions parents ask themselves, after their child has been diagnosed with ADHD is: “what went wrong with my child?”

That is why it is important to assure the parents that no one knows exactly what causes ADHD. Therefore, there is not much point in trying to search for answers in the past. To the contrary, it is much better to focus your energy on solutions to help your child now and in the future.

Parents often feel guilty and think their child’s ADHD has been caused by a bad home. Research, however, has shown that not all ADHD children come from instabile families. This knowledge can lift a huge weight off some parents’ shoulders.

At the very beginning, ADHD was thought to be caused by brain damage. This theory was quickly superseded, however, when it became clear that brain damage only accounts for a very small number of ADHD cases.

Afterwards, it was said that nutrients, such as colouring agents, preservatives and sugar were the cause. This point of view turned out to be untrue. A study showed that only 5% of the ADHD children benefited from a diet in which the above nutrients had been banned.

Recent research proves the link between the usage of alcohol or drugs during the pregnancy and the possibility of behaviour disorders, such as ADHD. Using those harmful substances often leads to brain damage, which in turn leads to behaviour disorders, related to ADHD.

Other recent investigations point out that ADHD often occurs in the same family. ADHD children have at least one close relative with ADHD. At least one third of the fathers, who suffered from ADHD as a child, have children with ADHD themselves. It is also typical that the majority of identical twins both have ADHD. Hardly ever does only one of both suffer from the disorder. Such research therefore indicates genetic inheritance, which still needs to be examined more thoroughly.

When ADHD has been diagnosed, it is important to find out as soon as possible how to help your child. This is far better than focusing on the causes, since those still need to be investigated more profoundly. The fact remains that Bach flowers can work miracles, even with little children. They improve concentration and reduce hyperactivity and impulsivity.
