How often does ADHD last throughout adulthood

This is a very important question, but a very difficult one to answer, since it implies that a number of people, who had ADHD as a child, need to be observed until they become adults.

Until present, only three studies have been performed in which at least 50% of the original test subjects were observed since they were a child until they reached adolescence. Those study results are quite mixed.

In the first study, which was carried out among 104 children, about 70% reported still having inconvenience from at least one of the ADHD key symptoms, that is concentration deficit, hyperactivity or impulsivity.

In the second study, performed in Sweden, 49% of the people who used to have ADHD as a child, informed about still having inconvenience from ADHD symptoms, even as an adult. Although both studies may indicate that ADHD lasts into adulthood, this is no certainty, since no formal diagnostic criteria had been used during the research.

The last longitudinal study did resort to diagnostic criteria to diagnose ADHD. That research showed that only 8% of the adults still had ADHD symptoms. Those results indicate that ADHD characteristics diminish as adulthood approaches and that they even fade away completely at an adult age.

Yet, we must remark that adults, who had ADHD in their childhood, still have remarkably more problems when it comes to concentration and behaviour control. This shows that, although objectively speaking, the symptoms have lessened to a large extent or have even disappeared completely, the adult still suffers after-effects from the ADHD he or she had as a child.

That is why it is very important to diagnose ADHD at a young age. As a result, the symptoms can be controlled fairly fast and will therefore affect the adult less later on. Bach flower essences are an excellent remedy to improve concentration and to make impulsivity and hyperactivity manageable.
