How reliable is an ADHD diagnosis with an adult?

Most ADHD experts agree that it is not easy to diagnose an adult with ADHD for 100% sure. One of the reasons is that the key symptoms, such as concentration deficit and hyperactivity / impulsivity need to present as early as in childhood, before the age of seven. That is why doctors need to appeal to people who knew the person when he or she was little, like parents, friends or teachers. This may complicate things, since not all those people are still alive, and if so, not all of them are willing to provide this information.

That is why doctors often have to rely on the information which the adult remembers from his childhood. How reliable is this information, though? The following research has been performed concerning this matter.

ADHD adults were requested to fill in a questionnaire in which they had to assess their own level of certain ADHD symptoms. The same question form had to be filled in by the ADHDer’s parents. The results of both questionnaires were very similar. In other words, the idea of ADHDers how they were as a child, is largely confirmed by their parents. This means that the information ADHD adults provide is fairly reliable.

The second investigation focused on the current behaviour of ADHDers. The professors wanted to check to what extent ADHD adults could assess themselves as for their level of ADHD characteristics. A questionnaire is submitted to the adult in question and his wife or her husband. It turned out that those results were very alike as well. This means that ADHD adults can judge their behaviour fairly objectively.

Both research projects are invaluable, since they have proven that doctors do not need to appeal to other people, to be able to diagnose ADHD with adults. The information provided by the adult himself is often reliable enough.
