How to treat a ADHD child best?

Be positive in your conversations with the child. Make him see you are concerned about him and tell him you are always willing to help, when necessary. For an ADHD child, this means that they can always fall back on someone who has more control and can set the facts straight.

It is also important to notify the school as quickly as possible that your child is suffering from ADHD, for reciprocal communication about the child’s behaviour can be very helpful. Treat the child like you would want to be treated yourself.
Be proactive. When your child moves on to the next grade, contact the teacher and discuss the typical behaviour he or she may expect. Tell him that ADHD children learn best when they are actively and physically involved.

You can support your child by offering structure and helping him organise. ADHD children are usually very chaotic. Provide daily schedules, create routines so the child has a recognizable pattern it can stick to. Write down the planned activities on a calender so the child can always look back when it has forgotten something. ADHD children need clear rules and arrangements. Reward them when they comply with the agreements.

ADHD children generally have a learning backlog compared to classmates. Take that into account and do not punish them for it. They often have arrears when it comes to languages and mathematics. Moreover, they do not learn that easily from past mistakes, they need more time than others. Try not to get frustrated or upset, because those elements are typical of ADHD. Always treat the child positively and stimulate its activities. ADHD children are often criticised and are punished frequently due to uncontrolled behaviour. That is why it is important for adults to reward the child’s behaviour at the right time.
