Boys with ADHD can be easily recognized. Apart from the fact that they get distracted easily and have trouble focusing their attention, they are often hyperactive and very impulsive in their actions. Those are classical symptoms of the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder with boys.
With girls, however, ADHD only surfaces through concentration deficit, which may lead to problems at school. Since those concentration disorders do not disturb the other classmates, it usually takes much longer before ADHD is diagnosed with girls.
Girls who have been diagnosed with ADHD can be helped as easily as boys. Their reaction to medication or other forms of therapy is no different than the reaction from boys.
In her book “Understanding Girls with ADHD”, Kathleen Nadeau mentions that many girls are diagnosed incorrectly, since their symptoms are different than those from boys. Since girls rebel less, are less annoying and are not so difficult compared to boys, they are less visible and therefore not noticed as easily as boys with ADHD.
It is advisable to stop and think when your daughter has attention deficit, without hyperactivity being an issue. Be aware that girls have other ADHD symptoms than boys. Impulsivity and uncontrolled behaviour are rarely to be perceived with girls.
Of course, the fact remains that attention deficit must not be automatically labeled as ADHD. Other elements, such as learning disorders or emotional problems may cause concentration deficit just as well.
