Several types of depression?

Depression can be divided into several subtypes, comparable to other diseases, such as heart conditions, which can manifest in various ways.

With certain people, depression can occur for shorter periods of a few weeks, but during which the symptoms are very intense, and with other people, depression will be less severe, but it can linger on for years and restrict them in their functioning. A combination of both is possible as well, i.e. you may have a few hidden depression symptoms which are not that intense, alternated by periods during which the symptoms are very distinct and hamper your everyday functioning.

Another typical variant of depression is the bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression. A bipolar disorder is characterized by an alternation of depressive and manic periods. A manic period is typified by hyperactivity, plenty of energy and much chatter. Sometimes those mood swings are very abrupt and unexpected, in practice, the transition is mostly very gradual. In the manic phase, the patients’ behaviour can be so inappropriate that they feel high and believe anything is possible. For instance, they will enter into commitments or make decisions which appear to be unrealisable afterwards. When manic behaviour is not treated, it can turn into a psychose.

Another type of depression has to do with a certain event in your life. We all experience situations from time to time which put us in a depressive mood, such as the death of a beloved or a divorce. Sometimes, the coping process or depression period may last longer than normal, or the depression’s intensity may be higher than average. As a result, daily activities can no longer be carried out normally, in which case you are suffering from depression.

A postnatal depression is a depression which occurs after giving birth. After the delivery, some new mothers go through a phase of great dejection, during which they do not even feel like seeing their child. That type of depression is quite current, especially when the mother is planning on having no more children.

Winter depression, as the name indicates itself, occurs in the darker periods of the year. When the days are shortening and there is less sunlight during the day, people may suffer from winter depression. Typical of this depression, is that it vanishes into thin air as soon as the winter period is over. When there are sufficient hours of sunlight, people revive and life becomes brighter and more joyful again. It is that type of people who chose to hibernate in sunny countries, where they are not affected by depressive moods.
