13. Divide large assignments into smaller sub-assignments: One of the problems with ADHDers is that they cannot focus their concentration on a task for long. It may be a solution to divide the work into sub-assignments, and to introduce regular breaks. For every finished sub-assignment, he or she can be rewarded. That feeling of success stimulates them to move on to the next task. Another way which works very well with ADHDers is turning things into a game. Try to improve the time your partner needs to mow the lawn, to empty the dishwasher or to make the beds.
12. Avoid postponing: One of the obstacles all partners of ADHDers are complaining about is the postponing in their relationship, although sometimes it is important to exhibit postponement behaviour. It is used to increase motivation to get started on something. By waiting, the pressure and need to start a job are growing, and therefore one is more motivated to get down to it. An adult with ADHD, however, tends to wait longer than any other person. As his partner, you must try to stay patient and not to express your irritation through anger and insults. Often an ADHD couple arrives late at appointments due to the postponement behaviour of the ADHDer. Most of the time, one partner is ready and waiting to go, but has to wait for his ADHD partner. An expedient might be turning the clock a quarter of an hour or even half an hour earlier than planned, which makes it very likely to arrive on time anyway.
