Tips to cope with ADHD better(2)

Use a beeper
Set a beeper to go off at regular intervals. That shakes you up and if you had strayed from your task, you can resume your work where you had left off. On the one hand, People with ADHD need more time to fulfil a certain assignment than others. The reason is that they are simply distracted much faster and that their attention shifts very easily to something they have just noticed or which has just occurred to them. On the other hand, People with ADHD can get so carried away in their work that they lose track of time and therefore fail to meet their appointments.

Buy yourself a tape recorder for in the car
People with ADHD often have many ideas and are very creative. They can come up with original notions and often see things totally differently. However, they are sometimes frustrated at having forgotten certain things, at the time they want to put them into practice. That is why it is handy to register a new creative idea on a tape recorder or a piece of paper. Recording things you still need to do so that you do not forget them might be useful as well. However, do not forget to congratulate yourself after finishing chores, it is really pleasing to give yourself a compliment once in a while.

Structure your work or study environment

Try working or studying in a silent room. It does not necessarily have to be as quiet as a mouse, because then People with ADHD tend to look for distraction. Silent, quiet background music from your favourite band usually does the trick. Do not place your desk in front of a window, there you get distracted too much by seeing all sorts of things. Also make sure to shut your door so that people cannot walk in and out of your study all the time.

Divide an assignment into smaller ones. Someone suffering from ADHD may really dread starting a large project. When the assignment is split up into sub-assignments, work becomes much more survivable and you can work your way  to an achievable goal. People with ADHD may panic when they are not able to get a view of the whole picture, which disables them to focus on their task and as a result, they do a poor job.
