What are the diagnostic criteria for ADHD?

 

The two main criteria to diagnose ADHD are hyperactivity and concentration disorders. Both categories manifest themselves through several characteristics. At least six of those should be present over more than six months, before a person is to be diagnosed with ADHD.


Concentration disorders with ADHDers
• Easily overlook details and make mistakes at work, at school or elsewhere because of inattention.


• Have trouble focusing on the job at hand.


• Often appear not be listening when being talked to.
• Have problems organizing tasks and activities in a structured way.


• Brain-racking activities are avoided or performed reluctantly.


• Tend to lose items which are important to carry out a job or assignment.
• Are easily distracted by external stimuli.
• Are forgetful during everyday activities.


Hyperactivity / impulsivity with ADHD
• Have problems keeping hands and feet still and sitting on a chair quietly.
• Often leave their place or chair in situations where this is not allowed.
• Walk around or climb things whenever possible
• Find it hard to play quietly, are rather loud most of the time.


• Live like a ‘rocket’.
• Give an answer before the question has even been posed.
• Can hardly wait their turn when standing in a queue.
• Interrupt others while they are speaking or playing.


Some of the above ADHD symptoms may already have been present before the age of seven.


ADHD symptons should be visible in at least two different environments, for example at school and at home.


The characteristics should be evaluated by someone familiar with ADHD.
