What are the main communication problems with ADHD? (2)

Speaking fast: ADHDers, specifically of the subtype hyperactivity / impulsivity, have a tendency of expressing all their information as quickly as possible so that they would not forget anything and so that they can pass on everything that is going through their head. That is why the conversation partner may feel like it is a monologue instead of a dialogue. It is very difficult for the interlocutor to get a word in edgeways. As a conversation partner, you feel as if a waterfall of words is pouring down on you, you feel overwhelmed and have trouble remembering and absorbing all the information.

Thinking aloud: ADHDers are inclined to think aloud. Instead of keeping their thoughts to themselves, they are saying aloud what is going through their head. That may be positive in brainstorming sessions but can definitely be negative in diplomatic negotiations.

Not being concentrated: During a conversation, it is very difficult for an ADHDer to keep his focus throughout the entire conversation. ADHDers are distracted very easily by things they see or hear or simply by their own thoughts. They can suddenly start daydreaming and be absent-minded in the middle of a conversation. That makes the conversation partner feel like he is not important enough to pay attention to, which leads to tension and frustration.

Obsessive thoughts: ADHDers can really be absorbed in their thoughts completely. So to speak, a bomb could go off right next to them and they still would not have heard. That may be a handicap, which refrains them from adopting an attentive attitude in a conversation.

Not getting the message: ADHDers tend to draw conclusions very fast. After having heard only half a world, they think they already know what the other is trying to say, and as a result, they stop listening. That is why an ADHDer often does not get the real message from his interlocutor. Therefore, they must keep alert and stay attentive, although they think they already know what the other person will say.
