Within the term ADHD, one can distinguish three different subtypes. Occasionally, the first type is referred to as ADD, since there are hardly or no hyperactivity problems, but only concentration deficit. As opposed to the first type, hyperactivity and impulsivity are the main elements of the second type. The third type of ADHD is a combination, in which the person suffers from both hyperactivity and concentration deficit.
In America, scientists examined the similarities and differences with the various types of ADHD. Their research revealed these results:
• The combined type of ADHD is most current with 61%, the ADD type scores 30% and the hyperactive type is the last one in the list with 9%.
• For all the people with ADHD, it took quite a while before they were diagnosed. This varied from 1.9 years for the hyperactive type to 4.4 years for the ADD type. That is important information, since it signifies that most children are only treated accurately, after they have already been inconvienced by the ADHD for several years .
• Children with the combined type ADHD manifested extra behaviour problems the most, such as the bipolar disorder (manic depression and extreme mood swings). In general, children with ADHD, regardless of the subtype, had more extra behaviour problems than children without.
• Complaints concerning depression were the least occurring with the hyperactive type.
• Children with ADHD, irrespective of their subtype, often scored worse as for intelligence and social skills.
This study confirms the division of ADHD into three subtypes. It demonstrates that the different types actually exist and manifest through specific behaviour. Moreover, the research reveals that children with the combined type (both attention deficit and hyperactivity / impulsivity) are much more susceptible to other behaviour problems, such as manic depression. Parents of such children need to be very attentive.
