What happens to the brain when you are depressed?

Depression influences the brain’s functioning, the neurotransmitters in particular. Those chemical substances, produced in the brain, help transfer the information between brain cells.

Certain neurotransmitters regulate a person’s mood. When their level is not sufficient, that may result in depression. The way that the brain responds to stressing situations, such as the death of a beloved person or a divorce can disrupt the balance of the neurotransmitters and lead to depression.

A person can experience depression too without any stressing situation or slightest pretence at all. That is why medical studies have shown that certain people have a genetic predisposition for depression, since they are very susceptible to exhibit a disbalance in the neurotransmitter level, which affects their mood.

All drugs which are admitted to depressed people, therefore act on those substances in the brain, intending to restore the internal balance.

Bach flower essences can help cure depression and restore the balance indirectly. Should you want to read more about it, click “depression”.
