If you have a physical complaint, you may sometimes feel depressed. If that down feeling is very intense and keeps on lasting, you may have an “additional” depression, which concurs with your physical disease.
Depression is a severe but curable affliction. People with certain physical diseases or complaints are more liable to develop this disease. A heart condition is one of them, but also cancer, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, hormonal diseases and previous heart attacks are examples of such physical complaints.
The strange aspect is that this additional depression remains invisible, since the physical disease is the centre of attention. That is why it is often a neglected problem, as a result of which the person involved generally feels misunderstood. He supposes that it is typical of his disease and that it is a normal consequence, which is definitely not the case. As it happens, not all people with the diseases mentioned above, develop a depression. Yet, if depression were diagnosed better, the life quality of such people would improve immensely.
Symptoms of depression and other diseases which are alike:
• Weight loss, sleeping disorders and less energy are characteristics of depression but of diabetes, heart conditions, cancer, thyroid gland problems and certain neurological afflictions as well. • Apathy, reduced concentration and memory problems occur both with Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s and with depression. • Medication to combat high blood pressure and diabetes may cause side effects which are similar to symptoms of depression.
Depression may lead to other eating habits, other sleep patterns, problems with concentration and memory, feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness and negative thinking.
The good news is that 80% of all depressed people can be treated successfully. Bach flowers are no exception to this rule, on the contrary. Life can become filled with joy again!
